Manham Port

You will hear a guide describing the history and attractions of Manham Port.

First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15.

Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15.

Welcome to Manham Port, where a thousand years of history have been recreated.

Families can explore the copper mine and machinery models, dress in 19th century costume for photographs, and discover how people once lived, worked, studied and played.

Manham lies in peaceful countryside on a bend of the River Avon.

The port developed here because this is the highest point that boats can navigate.

Cargo could conveniently be transferred between river vessels and the sea more than 23 miles away.

A small port existed when tin was found nearby around 900 years ago.

Its dramatic expansion came later during the Industrial Revolution when demand for all kinds of metal rose sharply.

By the late 19th century, lead, copper, manganese and arsenic were also shipped from Manham.

Originally, ores were processed close to the mines.

As demand increased, however, smelting required enormous furnaces and the area lacked sufficient coal.

Mineral-bearing rock, therefore, had to be transported elsewhere for processing.

During the 20th century, the port declined and thousands of workers left the area.

Buildings deteriorated and Manham was almost forgotten.

The Manham Trust was then established to preserve its historical resources.

Volunteers cleared vegetation to reveal the original installations.

Paid specialists compared these remains with historic maps and began rebuilding the complete port complex.

The aim is to restore Manham to its peak as the country's greatest copper port.

Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20.

Now listen and answer questions 16 to 20.

What can visitors see today?

Begin at the Copper Mine.

Adapted miners' trains carry passengers deep into the mountain, along seams, once worked by hundreds of people.

Notice the large pumps that removed water.

The mine is dark and enclosed, so children under five and dogs must not enter.

Next, visit the village school.

Explore the classrooms and the exceptional exhibition of games, one of the largest collections anywhere.

We recommend joining a guided tour, which allows you to ask questions.

Near the school stands an old sailing vessel called the George.

Visitors may board and inspect its cabins.

Its wheel was missing until a fisherman recovered it from the silt five years ago.

It has been restored to its original position.

Take care on the ladders leading to the lower deck and do not allow young children to use them.

We hope you enjoy Manham Port and recommend it to your friends.

That is the end of part two.

You now have one minute to check your answers to part two.
