NARRATOR:
You will hear a man asking about a part-time job at a restaurant.
NARRATOR:
First you have some time to look at questions one to six.
NARRATOR:
Now listen carefully and answer questions one to six.
WOMAN:
Good evening King's restaurant.
MAN:
I'm calling about the vacancy I've heard you have.
WOMAN:
Yes, that's right.
MAN:
I'd like to ask for a few more details if that's all right.
WOMAN:
Could I take your name first?
WOMAN:
Ask whatever you need to know and if the position still suits you we can arrange an interview.
MAN:
I didn't see the advertisement myself.
MAN:
A friend told me about it.
WOMAN:
That's absolutely fine.
WOMAN:
What would you like to know?
MAN:
First, what does the work involve?
MAN:
Is it washing dishes?
WOMAN:
No, the main duty is answering the phone rather than serving at the tables.
MAN:
That sounds suitable.
MAN:
How many evenings would I work each week?
WOMAN:
The restaurant is busiest at weekends.
MAN:
So would that mean two evenings?
WOMAN:
Actually, it would be three making 12 hours altogether each week.
MAN:
That shouldn't affect my studies.
WOMAN:
Are you studying at the university?
MAN:
Yes, I'm a first-year physics student as I'm not from the EU.
MAN:
Would I need a work permit?
WOMAN:
Your tutor just needs to sign it.
MAN:
That should be easy to arrange.
MAN:
Which restaurant is the vacancy at?
WOMAN:
We have two branches, but this job is at the Hills Dunne Road one.
MAN:
I'm not familiar with that name.
MAN:
Is there a bus stop nearby?
WOMAN:
Yes, the closest stop is beside the library.
MAN:
I know where that is.
MAN:
And what is the hourly rate?
WOMAN:
We pay £4.45 an hour.
MAN:
My previous job only paid £3.95. We think it's competitive, and there are some useful additional benefits too.
WOMAN:
You receive a free dinner during your shift.
MAN:
Better than the food at my hostel, then?
WOMAN:
We also pay a higher rate if you work on national holidays.
MAN:
That's a worthwhile benefit.
WOMAN:
And because public transport becomes difficult late at night, we'll take you home if your shift finishes after 11 o'clock.
NARRATOR:
Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.
NARRATOR:
Now listen and answer questions 7 to 10.
WOMAN:
If you're still interested, we'd be happy to invite you for an interview.
MAN:
Before we arrange it, what qualities do you need?
WOMAN:
For this role, a clear voice is essential, and yours is certainly clear.
WOMAN:
You also need to be able to think quickly when you're dealing with callers.
MAN:
I believe I can do that.
WOMAN:
When could you come in?
WOMAN:
We're fairly quiet this evening.
MAN:
I can't manage tonight or tomorrow, I'm afraid.
MAN:
Thursday would work.
MAN:
That's the 22nd of October.
MAN:
Would 6 o'clock be convenient?
WOMAN:
Please bring the names of two referees.
MAN:
Who should I ask for when I arrive?
WOMAN:
My name is Samira Manuja.
MAN:
Would you spell the surname, please?
MAN:
Thank you very much.
WOMAN:
I look forward to meeting you.
NARRATOR:
That is the end of part one.
NARRATOR:
You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.
