- Present perfect tense

Ví dụ: Modern languages were the most popular course in 1985, but this has been overtaken by IT in the present year.

=> Sử dụng thì hiện tại hoàn thành (has been overtaken) cho thấy sự thay đổi này xảy ra trong quá khứ nhưng vẫn ảnh hưởng đến hiện tại, tức là IT vẫn là môn học phổ biến trong năm nay.

- Past simple tense

Ví dụ: In 1985, nearly a quarter of students chose to learn different languages [...]. This was closely followed by fitness and dance courses, which accounted for 22% of the total enrollment.

=> Mệnh đề quan hệ này giúp bổ sung thông tin, giúp làm rõ các chi tiết liên quan đến Noun trước đó (fitness and dance courses, local history and cookery).

Ví dụ: While the percentage of students enrolling in fitness and dance classes remained static, at 22%, music appreciation is no longer taught at the center.
