South City Cycling Club

NARRATOR:

You will hear a woman asking the secretary of a cycling club about membership and training rides.

NARRATOR:

First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 6.

NARRATOR:

Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 6.

JIM:

Hello, South City Cycling Club.

JIM:

Jim speaking.

WOMAN:

Hi, I'm calling because I'd like some information about joining.

JIM:

Of course.

JIM:

I'm the club's secretary, Jim Hunter.

JIM:

Is the membership for you?

WOMAN:

Yes, it is.

JIM:

We offer two types for adults.

JIM:

Full membership is aimed at people who cycle seriously.

JIM:

It costs $260 and covers ordinary cycling as well as races in the city and around Australia.

WOMAN:

I'm not really at that level.

WOMAN:

I mainly want to join some rides when I have time.

JIM:

Then recreational membership may suit you.

JIM:

It's $108 for anyone over 19 and $95 for younger members.

WOMAN:

I'm 25.

JIM:

The fee is paid quarterly.

JIM:

It covers the club charge and insurance in case of an accident, though naturally we hope that is never needed.

WOMAN:

I think I'll choose recreational membership.

WOMAN:

Does that still let me take part in club activities?

JIM:

Yes, and once you join, you may wear our green and white club kit.

WOMAN:

I've noticed cyclists wearing it.

WOMAN:

Is it produced by the club?

JIM:

No, a company in Brisbane called Jerriz makes it.

JIM:

That's J-E-R-R-I-Z.

JIM:

You can order online using your membership number.

WOMAN:

Could you tell me about the training rides?

JIM:

Certainly.

JIM:

We run the most mornings, and they're a good way to develop both fitness and general cycling ability.

JIM:

We have three levels.

JIM:

Level A riders average at least 30 or 35 kilometers an hour.

JIM:

If you can manage about 25, Level B is probably right.

JIM:

Level C averages roughly 15.

WOMAN:

Level B sounds right.

WOMAN:

When do those sessions meet?

JIM:

There are two each week.

JIM:

Tuesday's ride begins at 5.30 a.m. with everyone meeting outside the stadium.

WOMAN:

Very early.

WOMAN:

And the other ride?

JIM:

It is also at 5.30 on Thursday, but the meeting point is the main entrance to the park.

WOMAN:

Is that just beyond the shopping center?

JIM:

Yes, exactly.

NARRATOR:

Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.

NARRATOR:

Now listen and answer questions 7 to 10.

WOMAN:

How long do the rides usually last?

JIM:

Around 90 minutes, so they're easy to fit in before work.

JIM:

Afterwards, members often stop somewhere for coffee, which makes the ride quite social.

WOMAN:

That sounds ideal.

WOMAN:

I'm new to the city and don't know many people yet.

JIM:

It is an excellent way to meet others.

WOMAN:

Does every ride have a leader?

JIM:

Not always.

JIM:

The riders support one another, so a leader is not essential.

WOMAN:

How do we know where to go?

JIM:

The website shows a clearly marked route for every ride.

JIM:

Print it beforehand and take it with you.

JIM:

The route changes from one week to the next.

WOMAN:

What equipment should I bring?

JIM:

Water and your phone.

JIM:

Do not use the phone while riding, of course, but keep it with you.

JIM:

In winter, we leave before sunrise, so your bicycle must also have lights.

WOMAN:

Great.

WOMAN:

I'd definitely like to join.

WOMAN:

What should I do next?

JIM:

You can...

NARRATOR:

That is the end of part one.
