NARRATOR:
You will hear a man asking a sailing club representative about beginner courses.
NARRATOR:
First, you have some time to look at questions one to six.
NARRATOR:
Now listen carefully and answer questions one to six.
WOMAN:
Good morning Oyster Bay Sailing Club.
WOMAN:
What can I do for you?
MAN:
Hi, I'm calling to ask about courses for someone who's new to sailing.
WOMAN:
Certainly, are you looking for yourself?
MAN:
I've read the information on your website, but I still can't work out which course would suit me best.
WOMAN:
One possibility is one of our taster days.
WOMAN:
They're intended for complete beginners.
WOMAN:
The day gives you a first experience of sailing, so you can decide whether it's something you'd like to continue with.
MAN:
What does a day cost?
WOMAN:
A single booking is £120.
WOMAN:
If two people book together, the price falls to £110 per person.
WOMAN:
That's no problem.
WOMAN:
The groups are kept quite small.
WOMAN:
We normally have around eight learners and ten is the absolute maximum.
WOMAN:
People tend to be very welcoming as well.
MAN:
Is there another course that could be suitable?
WOMAN:
The alternative is level one.
WOMAN:
It runs over a weekend for two days and we offer it throughout the year.
MAN:
And what does that course cover?
WOMAN:
Well, there's both classroom work and practical training.
WOMAN:
The theory includes weather conditions, which you obviously need to understand, along with the tides.
WOMAN:
You'll also develop the basic skills needed to handle a boat.
WOMAN:
For the practical sessions, you go into the harbour in dinghies designed for beginners.
WOMAN:
There are two learners in each boat with an instructor who makes sure everyone receives all the necessary safety guidance.
MAN:
That sounds fairly demanding.
WOMAN:
It is quite intensive, but it's enjoyable too.
MAN:
How much is level one?
WOMAN:
Members pay a little less though.
WOMAN:
The club offers them a discount, you see.
MAN:
Um, well, I haven't decided whether to become a member though.
WOMAN:
There's no need to decide straight away.
MAN:
Is everything covered by that fee?
WOMAN:
Yes, it's all included.
WOMAN:
We also give you a very handy dictionary of sailing terms.
WOMAN:
Beginners often find the vocabulary difficult at first and the illustrations in it make the explanations much clearer.
WOMAN:
Once you finish the course, you're awarded a certificate.
WOMAN:
After that, you can progress to level two.
NARRATOR:
Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions seven to ten.
NARRATOR:
Now listen carefully and answer questions seven to ten.
WOMAN:
That covers the courses.
WOMAN:
There are just a few practical points you should know.
WOMAN:
First, everyone taking part needs to be able to swim.
MAN:
I'm comfortable in the water.
WOMAN:
We supply wetsuits and life jackets, but you'll need your own swimming trunks and an old pair of trainers.
MAN:
Should I bring a towel as well?
WOMAN:
You may also want your own toiletries, such as shampoo.
MAN:
What happens about meals?
MAN:
Do I need to bring something or does the club have a cafe?
WOMAN:
There's a cafe on site.
WOMAN:
It sells sandwiches, cakes and snacks, and the prices are quite reasonable.
MAN:
I'm leaning towards level one, but I have no experience at all.
MAN:
Is there anything I could do beforehand?
WOMAN:
I'd suggest watching the videos we use as training material.
WOMAN:
They're online and I can email you the link.
WOMAN:
They'll help you understand what the course will be like.
MAN:
I'll probably come by bicycle, so I'll need a secure place for my valuables.
MAN:
Are there lockers I can use?
WOMAN:
Yes, you'll find plenty of them in the changing rooms.
MAN:
In that case, could you reserve a place for me?
NARRATOR:
That is the end of part one.
NARRATOR:
You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.
