NARRATOR:
You will hear an interviewer who is carrying out a survey about shopping in Broad Beach.
NARRATOR:
First, you have some time to look at questions one to six.
NARRATOR:
Now listen carefully and answer questions one to six.
INTERVIEWER:
Good afternoon.
INTERVIEWER:
I'm asking people about their shopping habits in Broad Beach.
INTERVIEWER:
Would you mind answering a few questions?
RACHEL:
That's fine as long as it doesn't take too long.
RACHEL:
I need to get back to work soon.
INTERVIEWER:
It should only take a few minutes.
INTERVIEWER:
Could I begin with your name?
INTERVIEWER:
Is your surname K-E-E-T-I-N-G?
RACHEL:
It begins with K-E-A then T-I-N-G.
INTERVIEWER:
Right, I've got that.
INTERVIEWER:
We use names only to keep the survey form separate.
INTERVIEWER:
Now how did you travel into the town center today?
RACHEL:
I usually take the tram because parking is difficult.
RACHEL:
But the weather was so good this morning that I came on my bicycle.
INTERVIEWER:
So you didn't use public transport today?
RACHEL:
The bicycle was quicker actually because the tram was delayed.
INTERVIEWER:
And what brought you into Broad Beach today?
INTERVIEWER:
Have you been shopping already?
RACHEL:
I've done one appointment.
RACHEL:
I've just come from the optician where I had my eyes tested.
RACHEL:
I thought I might need new glasses, but fortunately I don't.
INTERVIEWER:
That's good news.
INTERVIEWER:
Is there anything you still need to buy?
RACHEL:
I'm going to a conference next month, and at first I thought I needed a whole suit.
RACHEL:
But my trousers are fine, so I'm really looking for a new jacket.
INTERVIEWER:
Any other errands while you're here?
RACHEL:
I have to collect my camera from the repair shop.
RACHEL:
The screen stopped working last week.
RACHEL:
They said it might take 10 days, but they phoned yesterday to say the camera was ready.
INTERVIEWER:
At least it was repaired quickly.
RACHEL:
Although I've been using my phone for photographs in the meantime.
INTERVIEWER:
Today is Friday.
INTERVIEWER:
Is Friday normally your favorite day to shop?
RACHEL:
Fridays get rather crowded after lunch.
RACHEL:
I sometimes come on Monday if I need groceries, but Wednesday is the day I prefer.
RACHEL:
I finish work early then, and most of the shops stay open until 6.
NARRATOR:
Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.
NARRATOR:
Now listen and answer questions 7 to 10.
INTERVIEWER:
I'd also like your opinion of shopping in the town center.
INTERVIEWER:
How do you find the staff in the shops?
RACHEL:
Even when a shop is busy, the assistants usually take time to help.
RACHEL:
I'd describe the service as excellent.
INTERVIEWER:
What about the range of shops?
INTERVIEWER:
Some people say the center has changed a lot recently.
RACHEL:
We've gained several cafes which are useful if you want a hot drink, and three new places selling sandwiches.
RACHEL:
That's excessive.
RACHEL:
One sandwich shop would have been enough.
INTERVIEWER:
So there are too many sandwich outlets.
INTERVIEWER:
What kind of shop would you rather have?
RACHEL:
We already have plenty of clothes shops and a couple of good gift shops.
RACHEL:
What's missing is somewhere practical.
RACHEL:
There's only one small shop where you can buy stationary, and its range is poor.
RACHEL:
I'd like another place selling that.
INTERVIEWER:
Have you visited the new shopping center outside Broad Beach?
RACHEL:
It's easy to reach from my neighborhood, and I like the way the building has been designed.
INTERVIEWER:
The glass entrance has received a lot of attention.
RACHEL:
Yes, and the roof brings in plenty of light.
RACHEL:
But the fountains in the central courtyard are my favorite feature.
RACHEL:
Children can play beside them, and they make the whole place feel cooler.
INTERVIEWER:
The center also has several leisure facilities.
INTERVIEWER:
What do you think of those?
RACHEL:
The cinema is useful because it shows films the one in town doesn't, but I don't understand why they built a gym there.
RACHEL:
Broad Beach already has a larger sports center nearby with lower membership fees, so the gym seems unnecessary.
INTERVIEWER:
That covers everything.
INTERVIEWER:
Thank you for your help, Rachel.
