NARRATOR:
You will hear a man who has recently moved to Southo speaking to the coordinator of the village volunteer group.
NARRATOR:
First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 7.
NARRATOR:
Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 7.
JANE:
Hello, Jane Fairbank speaking.
FRANK:
Good morning, I'm Frank Pritchard.
FRANK:
I've recently retired and moved to Southo, and I'd like to do some voluntary work.
FRANK:
I understand that you coordinate volunteering in the village.
FRANK:
What kinds of jobs are available?
JANE:
The village library needs some help.
JANE:
We borrow books from the town library, and local people donate books as well.
JANE:
Someone with a car could help with collecting them.
FRANK:
I have a car, so that would be fine.
JANE:
The timing is flexible, and we can arrange it around you.
JANE:
We also keep records of every book that is donated or borrowed, including which ones must go back to the town library.
JANE:
We need another person to keep those records up to date.
FRANK:
I'm comfortable using a computer.
FRANK:
I assume the records are computerised.
FRANK:
Does the library have its own purpose-built building?
FRANK:
I haven't seen one while walking around the village.
JANE:
No, it operates from the west room in the village hall.
JANE:
That's the room on your left when you enter.
FRANK:
I'll have to take a look inside the hall.
JANE:
It's a lovely building.
FRANK:
Is there also a lunch club for older residents?
FRANK:
Many villages seem to have one.
JANE:
Yes, and ours is very popular.
FRANK:
I could provide transport, if that would help.
JANE:
It certainly would.
JANE:
Some members travel in from nearby villages, so we are always looking for additional drivers.
FRANK:
Are there smaller groups at the club for particular hobbies?
FRANK:
I'd be interested in helping with one or two, especially anything involving art.
JANE:
I'll check which groups need support and contact you.
FRANK:
Do you ever arrange help for individual residents?
JANE:
Yes, but usually as a one-off.
JANE:
For example, Mrs Carol needs someone to take her to hospital next week, and we haven't managed to find a driver yet.
FRANK:
When is her appointment?
JANE:
It's on Tuesday, and the trip would take the whole morning.
JANE:
That would be wonderful, thank you.
JANE:
We also need help at Mr Selisbury's house next week before he moves, as his health prevents him from doing the work himself.
JANE:
Other volunteers will decorate the kitchen, but it would be very helpful if you could do some weeding in the garden.
FRANK:
I'd be happy to do that.
FRANK:
I suppose the day and time can be arranged?
JANE:
Tell us what suits you, and we'll inform Mr Selisbury.
NARRATOR:
Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions eight to ten.
NARRATOR:
Now listen and answer questions eight to ten.
JANE:
The volunteer group also runs a social event each month, which is a good opportunity to get to know people.
JANE:
The next one is on the 19th of October.
JANE:
It's a quiz planned by two residents who are very good at coming up with unusual questions, and the village hall is always full.
FRANK:
That sounds enjoyable.
FRANK:
Is there anything I can do?
JANE:
With so many people attending, we need plenty of refreshments during the break.
JANE:
If you could provide something, we'd really appreciate it.
FRANK:
I'll decide what to make and let you know.
JANE:
On the 18th of November, there will be a dance, again in the village hall.
JANE:
We've hired a band that plays music from the 1930s.
JANE:
They performed here before, and many people asked us to invite them back.
FRANK:
Dancing isn't really my thing, but I'd still like to help.
JANE:
We sell tickets beforehand, and we need an extra person at the entrance to check them as guests arrive.
JANE:
Otherwise, a queue can build up when everyone comes at the same time.
FRANK:
That's fine with me.
JANE:
We're also planning a large New Year's Eve party.
JANE:
It won't be in the village hall.
JANE:
Instead, we're using the Mount Fort Hotel.
FRANK:
Sorry, which hotel?
JANE:
It's a couple of miles outside Southo.
JANE:
The hotel is supplying dinner, and we've already booked a band.
JANE:
What we still need is a poster.
JANE:
Would you be able to design one?
FRANK:
I worked as a graphic designer before I retired, so that's exactly the sort of thing I can do.
JANE:
I'll send you the details, and perhaps you could let me see a draft.
