The Sleepy Lizard

You will hear a lecturer describing research on the sleepy lizard.

First, you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40.

Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.

Last week we began our study of reptiles with crocodiles and snakes.

Today we will turn to a different reptile, the lizard, focusing on research into a species whose Latin name is Tiliqua rugosa.

It is usually called the sleepy lizard because it moves slowly and spends long periods resting beneath rocks or warming itself in the sun.

Let me begin with its appearance.

Sleepy lizards are widespread in Western and South Australia.

Whereas most European lizards are small, green, and quick, this species is brown.

Its most recognizable feature is its dark blue tongue, which contrasts sharply with the bright pink interior of its mouth.

It is also considerably larger than most European species.

Its diet is varied and includes insects and even small animals, although plants make up the largest part.

Despite their size and powerful jaws, which can break beetles and snail shells, sleepy lizards have several predators.

In the past, large birds such as cassowaries were a major threat.

Today, snakes are more likely to catch and kill them.

Cars are another serious danger because many lizards die while crossing roads.

Michael Freak of Flinders University conducted a study of how these animals navigate.

Although they travel slowly, they can cover substantial distances.

He moved some lizards away from their territory and found that they generally returned home if they had a clear view of the sky.

They did not appear to rely on landmarks at ground level.

Field observations have also revealed unusual mating behavior.

Unlike most animals, sleepy lizards appear to be largely monogamous, reuniting with the same partner for several years.

A male and female remain together for an extended period both before and after their young hatch.

Why might they do this?

One possibility is that two adults improve the young lizard's chances of survival.

However, researchers have seen almost no contact between parents and offspring once the eggs have hatched, so the evidence does not support that explanation.

A second idea comes from the fact that males in these long-term pairs are often larger and stronger than other males.

The male may remain with the female to provide protection from competing males, though this has not been proved.

Finally, I want to describe a tracking project in which I took part.

We captured wild lizards and fitted each one with a very small GPS unit attached to its tail.

After releasing them, we followed their movements for 12 days.

The equipment recorded not only location but also the number of steps each animal took.

The results contained one unexpected pattern.

The lizards met far less often than we had predicted.

They seemed to be keeping away from one another.

We cannot yet be certain why, but one hypothesis is that fights between males can cause serious injuries.

Avoidance may therefore reduce the risk of injury and serve as a form of self-preservation.

Much more evidence is needed before we can confirm this.

That is the end of Part 4.
