NARRATOR:
You will now hear a man asking a friend for suggestions about what to do in the city with relatives who are bringing their children.
NARRATOR:
First, you have some time to look at questions one to six.
NARRATOR:
Now listen carefully and answer questions one to six.
MAN:
Sandra, didn't you have some relatives staying with you not long ago?
SANDRA:
My brother came with his family a couple of months back.
MAN:
I was hoping you could give me a bit of advice.
MAN:
My cousin and her family are coming next month.
MAN:
And since I haven't got children myself, I'm not sure where I should take them.
SANDRA:
Have they sorted out somewhere to stay?
SANDRA:
Will they be staying at your flat?
MAN:
Luckily, there simply isn't enough space.
MAN:
My cousin has asked me to suggest a hotel.
MAN:
Can you think of one?
SANDRA:
I normally tell visitors to book the King's Hotel.
MAN:
What part of town is it in?
SANDRA:
It's only about a five-minute walk from Murray Station, so the location is very central.
SANDRA:
The hotel itself is on George Street.
MAN:
Oh, I know the place.
MAN:
They can't spend too much, though.
MAN:
Roughly what would a room cost?
SANDRA:
A family room is approximately 125 pounds a night, if you reserve one.
SANDRA:
My brother eventually chose two double rooms instead, and each of those came to about 95 pounds.
MAN:
That sounds fairly reasonable.
SANDRA:
How old are your cousin's children?
MAN:
I'd like to arrange a few outings while they're here.
MAN:
As they've never visited the city, I thought a bus tour around the center might be a good start.
SANDRA:
The bus tours cost quite a lot.
SANDRA:
A walking tour would be a better choice, in my opinion.
SANDRA:
You get a much stronger sense of the city that way.
SANDRA:
There's one which leaves from Colton Square.
SANDRA:
It lasts around two hours and is reasonably priced.
MAN:
I'll find out more about it.
SANDRA:
If you get good weather, you could take them to the old fort.
SANDRA:
There's a boat that goes there.
SANDRA:
The return trip takes about half a day altogether.
MAN:
That's a brilliant suggestion.
MAN:
I'd enjoy that trip as well.
MAN:
For a rainy day, I was considering the Science Museum.
MAN:
Perhaps they could visit while I'm working.
SANDRA:
Yes, but remember that the museum doesn't open on Mondays.
MAN:
They arrive on Saturday and are staying for four nights.
MAN:
So Tuesday seems the best day.
SANDRA:
It should be quieter then, too.
SANDRA:
Saturdays are incredibly busy.
SANDRA:
I took my children to the old computers exhibition there, and the crowds were awful.
SANDRA:
I meant to see it again.
SANDRA:
But that exhibition has ended now.
MAN:
My cousin's children would have liked it.
SANDRA:
A new exhibition about space is due to open soon, and that looks excellent as well.
MAN:
I'll tell my cousin about it.
NARRATOR:
Before the conversation continues, you have some time to look at questions seven to ten.
NARRATOR:
Now listen to the rest of the conversation and answer questions seven to ten.
SANDRA:
Have you decided where you might take everyone for meals?
MAN:
I'm a big fan of the food stalls in Clackton Market.
MAN:
My cousin is vegetarian.
MAN:
That market is one of the best places for vegetarian food.
SANDRA:
There'll be plenty for the children to choose from as well.
SANDRA:
You do have to arrive fairly early, though.
SANDRA:
At weekends, most stalls finish serving lunch at two thirty.
MAN:
I'll have to plan the timing carefully.
MAN:
My cousin also wants to take the children to a theater show, but the tickets are very costly.
SANDRA:
However, if you use bargaintickets.com to book seats online for the next day, you can find some excellent offers.
SANDRA:
Certain seats are discounted by seventy-five percent.
MAN:
I'll definitely see if I can get some.
SANDRA:
And there are plenty of activities that won't cost anything.
SANDRA:
You don't need to spend a huge amount.
MAN:
What would you suggest?
SANDRA:
They're visiting next month, aren't they?
SANDRA:
Check whether their visit falls on the same weekend as the Roots Music Festival in Blakewell Gardens.
MAN:
Is that spelled R-O-O-T-S?
SANDRA:
You can look up the details online.
SANDRA:
It's always suitable for families, and admission is free.
MAN:
That would be perfect.
SANDRA:
While you're in Blakewell Gardens, you should also walk up Telegraph Hill.
SANDRA:
From the top, you can see straight down over the port.
SANDRA:
People are usually amazed by its enormous size.
MAN:
Oh, yes, I've wanted to go up there for ages.
MAN:
I've heard the view is fantastic.
SANDRA:
The climb is definitely worthwhile.
MAN:
You've given me a lot of useful ideas.
NARRATOR:
That is the end of part one.
NARRATOR:
You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.
