Minster Park

You will hear a guest speaker describing the history and recent redevelopment of Minster Park.

First, you have some time to look at questions 11-14.

Now listen carefully and answer questions 11-14.

I'm delighted to introduce our speaker this evening, Mark Logan, who will talk about the changes recently made to Minster Park.

Mark, please begin.

Oh, thank you.

Most of you know Minster Park, which has existed for well over a hundred years and has usually been managed by the City Council.

Its beginnings are less familiar.

Many public parks were once gardens attached to grand private houses.

But Minster was different.

In 1892, local residents began planting flowers on an unused piece of ground, whose ownership was uncertain.

The Council did not formally acquire the land until 20 years later.

You may have seen the statue close to one of the entrances.

It represents Diane Gosforth, an important figure in the park's history.

After taking legal possession, the Council intended to sell the site for housing, but local residents wanted to keep it as a public green space.

Especially because the surrounding neighbourhood was already densely built up.

Gosforth led petitions and public demonstrations, and the campaign eventually persuaded the Council to abandon the sale.

The First World War began soon afterwards, in 1914.

Most of the park was then dug over for growing vegetables, which were sold within the area.

The Army did consider using the park for military exercises and even contacted the Council, but decided that the site was too small.

A section of grass remained available for occasional public meetings.

After the war, the park was largely restored to its earlier appearance and changed very little for decades.

New plans were prepared several times, including a scheme in 2013.

That proposal was altered in 2015, before construction began.

The actual transformation started in 2016 and was completed on time last year.

Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 15 to 20.

Now listen and answer questions 15 to 20.

Now I'll describe what has changed and what remains.

On the map, the river marks the northern edge of the park, while the other three walls each contain a gate.

Diane Gosforth's statue has been relocated.

It once stood near the south gate, but is now directly north of the Lily Pond, close to the centre, where visitors can see it more easily.

A new collection of wooden sculptures has been installed beside the river, at the sharp bend in the path coming from the east gate.

Two sections are mainly for children.

The larger improved playground lies between the river and the path running north from the pond.

The second is a new circular maze formed by low hedges.

Starting at the west gate, walk north towards the river and turn left to reach it.

The long-established tennis courts have increased from four to eight.

They remain in the southwest corner, beside the right-angled turn in the path.

Finally, the new fitness area is immediately next to the Lily Pond, on the same side as the west gate.

Now I'd like to move on to the planting scheme.

❓Câu hỏi: How did the park first come into existence?

✅ Đáp án đúng: C. People from the neighbourhood planted on vacant land

▶️ Bắt đầu nghe ở: Đoạn người nói chuyển từ thông tin chung sang nguồn gốc ban đầu của công viên: “But Minster was different. In 1892, local residents began planting flowers on an unused piece of ground …”

☺️ Giải thích đáp án:

Đọc câu hỏi, xác định từ khóa cần nghe: first come into existence (= công viên ban đầu được hình thành như thế nào).
Audio đưa ra một ý khái quát trước: “Many public parks were once gardens attached to grand private houses”.

🧐 Lưu ý: ❌ A. The city council created it as a public facility. => Dễ nhầm vì có câu “has usually been managed by the City Council” và “The Council did not formally acquire the land until 20 years later”; tuy nhiên hội đồng chỉ quản lý/sở hữu về sau, không phải bên tạo ra công viên từ đầu. ❌ B. It was previously the grounds of a private residence. => Đây là bẫy từ câu “Many public parks were once gardens attached to grand private houses”; ngay sau đó speaker nói “But Minster was different”, nên Minster Park không có nguồn gốc như vậy.
