NARRATOR:
You will hear a woman asking a tourist information advisor about free activities in the Burnham area.
NARRATOR:
First, you have some time to look at questions one to six.
NARRATOR:
Now listen carefully and answer questions one to six.
MARTIN:
Burnham tourist information.
SUE:
I noticed a poster advertising free activities locally, and it's said to call this number for details.
SUE:
I'm visiting Burnham with my husband and our two children for a few days, arriving on either 27th or 28th June.
SUE:
And I'd like ideas for the 29th.
MARTIN:
Let's begin with two events intended especially for children.
MARTIN:
The art gallery is running an event called Family Welcome that day with activities and trails around the gallery.
SUE:
Wow, that sounds good.
SUE:
So when does it begin?
MARTIN:
The gallery itself opens at 10, but Family Welcome runs from 10.30 until 2.
MARTIN:
The gallery remains open until 5.
MARTIN:
Several times that day, they'll also screen a short film produced by the gallery.
MARTIN:
It shows how ceramics are made, and children will have equipment and materials to try the process themselves.
MARTIN:
At the previous event, the film focused on painting and was very popular, so this time they're preparing one about sculpture.
SUE:
What else is happening in Burnham?
MARTIN:
Well, does your family enjoy music?
MARTIN:
Then there are several free concerts at different times, one or two in the morning, most of them around lunchtime, and another couple in the evening.
MARTIN:
The music ranges from pop to Latin American.
SUE:
Latin American music might be fun.
SUE:
So when is that concert?
MARTIN:
It's performed several times at different venues.
MARTIN:
There's a performance in the Central Library at one.
MARTIN:
There's another at four in the City Museum, and a longer concert in the theater at 7.30 that evening.
SUE:
I'll mention that to my family.
MARTIN:
Well, you may also be interested in the boat race on the river.
SUE:
Yes, please tell me about it.
MARTIN:
It starts at Offord Marina, north of Burnham, and finishes at Summer Pool.
MARTIN:
Charlesworth Bridge offers the best view, although it becomes quite crowded.
SUE:
Who will be competing?
MARTIN:
Local boat clubs, and the standard is excellent.
MARTIN:
One club won the West of England Regional Championship in May this year, the first Burnham team ever to do so.
MARTIN:
As a result, it will represent the region at next year's National Championship.
NARRATOR:
Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.
NARRATOR:
Now listen and answer questions 7 to 10.
SUE:
I've also heard about Paxton Nature Reserve.
SUE:
It's a good place to spot unusual birds, isn't it?
MARTIN:
Yes, throughout the year.
MARTIN:
The Reserve has both a lake and a river, which form an excellent habitat, so bring binoculars if you have some.
MARTIN:
At present, you can also see several unusual flowers because Paxton has a rare type of soil.
MARTIN:
They're looking particularly good now.
SUE:
Well, my husband will be very interested in those.
MARTIN:
There will also be a talk and slide presentation about mushrooms.
MARTIN:
Afterwards, visitors can collect some and examine the different varieties.
SUE:
Can children swim in the river?
MARTIN:
One section of the river has been fenced to make it safe for children.
MARTIN:
The water is very shallow and a lifeguard is present whenever it is open.
MARTIN:
The lake is too deep, so swimming there is prohibited.
SUE:
We'll bring there swimming things in case we visit Paxton.
SUE:
How long is the drive from Burnham?
MARTIN:
About 20 minutes.
MARTIN:
Parking is extremely limited though, so the bus is usually easier and takes roughly the same amount of time.
SUE:
I'll discuss all these possibilities with the family.
SUE:
Thank you very much.
