A time when I did something guilty to a family member was during my teenage years, a phase when I often prioritized my social life over family responsibilities. It happened about six years ago when I forgot to pick up my younger sister from school, something I had promised to do earlier that day. She was around eight years old at the time, and since our parents were busy at work, it was my responsibility to make sure she got home safely.

The incident occurred on a Friday afternoon. My friends and I had decided to go out for snacks after school, and I became so our conversation that I completely forgot about my commitment. My sister waited outside her school for over an hour, and when she realized I wasn’t coming, she called my mom, who immediately left her meeting to pick her up. By the time I got home, I was met with a combination of worry and disappointment from both my sister and my mom.

I felt an overwhelming sense of guilt for and causing unnecessary stress for my mom. I apologized to both of them, and while my sister forgave me quite easily, I could tell she had felt hurt and in the moment. My mom was understandably upset, not just because of the inconvenience but because she expected more responsibility from me.
