Woman:
Hey Pete, are you back from your holiday then?
Pete:
Yes, I got back last night.
Pete:
No, I went to Canada.
Woman:
So, tell me about it.
Pete:
It started badly as I missed my flight.
Woman:
Oh no, what happened?
Pete:
I got stuck in a traffic jam in my taxi.
Pete:
Lots of cars were going to a different airport and the whole road was full of traffic.
Woman:
Oh no, that must have been terrible.
Woman:
Were you really stressed?
Pete:
When I realised that there was no way to get to the flight though, I felt better, as there was nothing else to do but wait until I spoke to someone at the airport.
Woman:
Did you have to pay for another flight?
Pete:
I could have gone the same day on a later flight, but I would have had to pay for that.
Woman:
I got one the next day without having to pay.
Woman:
Well, at least that was something.
Woman:
You missed a whole day of holiday though.
Pete:
Yes, it was a bit annoying, but I had only myself to blame.
Pete:
I know the roads can be bad.
Pete:
I should have stayed nearby to the airport the night before.
Woman:
Did the airline put you up in a hotel?
Pete:
It wasn't their fault that I missed the flight, so no.
Pete:
They did give me a food voucher though, as I had to hang around for a long time.
Pete:
In the end, I stayed with my old friend Mike.
Pete:
He doesn't live too far from the airport.
Pete:
I had to get a taxi there though and back again the next morning, and that wasn't cheap.
Woman:
How was the flight itself?
Pete:
I was flying to Toronto and it took around seven and a half hours.
Pete:
Unfortunately, I had left my book in the main check-in baggage, so the time passed slowly.
Woman:
Why didn't you watch a movie?
Pete:
That makes me sick on a plane.
Pete:
It's hard for me to drop off to sleep as well, as my neck gets stiff.
Pete:
It was good that I had two interesting people who sat next to me, so we had a conversation about Canada off and on for the whole flight.
Pete:
I learned quite a few things that I didn't know.
Woman:
I hope all the disasters were over by the time you reached Canada.
Pete:
It was quick to get through immigration, but then I found after a very long wait that there had been a mix-up back in England with my missed flight.
Pete:
My bags never made it on the plane and no one knew where they were.
Pete:
I had to spend twenty-four hours in Toronto with only the clothes I'd travelled in.
Woman:
You're lucky it wasn't winter.
Pete:
I'd have frozen to death without winter clothing.
Pete:
Anyway, that was the last disaster.
Pete:
The rest of the holiday was great.
Pete:
There was so much to see and do there.
Pete:
I needed more time, really, as I was only there for three days.
Woman:
What sort of things did you do then?
Pete:
I wanted to orientate myself to begin with, so I decided to go to the CN Tower and look around.
Woman:
Unfortunately, the lifts were closed for a week because of maintenance, so I had to give that a miss.
Pete:
Instead, the first morning I visited Fort York in the western downtown area.
Pete:
You know I have an interest in military history.
Pete:
There was an exhibition on there about 19th century military uniforms.
Woman:
I can imagine that you would have liked that.
Woman:
Did you manage to visit the Royal Ontario Museum?
Woman:
I told you about that before you left.
Pete:
I checked out their website, and it just wasn't something that I felt would interest me.
Pete:
I appreciate you telling me about it, though.
Pete:
While I was researching it, I found out about the Air and Space Museum, and I saw that on the second morning.
Woman:
How about the Art Gallery of Toronto?
Pete:
Again, I didn't think that would be of interest to me.
Pete:
But you know, I decided I should be a bit more open, so I gave it a go.
Pete:
It wasn't the most exciting experience in the world for me, but in the end, I was glad I tried it out.
Woman:
Did you get to see any sporting action when you were there?
Woman:
I know you're a big sports fan.
Pete:
I wanted to go to a hockey game.
Pete:
I went to the stadium, but it was out of season.
Pete:
The Hockey Hall of Fame made up for it, though.
Pete:
I spent nearly five hours there looking around.
Woman:
It's a shame about the game, though.
Pete:
Yes, but I did get to see the Blue Jays play at the Rogers Centre.
Pete:
They have football matches at the Rogers Centre, but this was baseball.
Woman:
Did you understand the rules?
Pete:
It was a bit complicated, but I found it easier than football.
Pete:
There was also a guy sitting next to me who explained.
Pete:
He was a real basketball fan, but he knew his baseball too.
Woman:
It sounds like you were pretty busy.
Pete:
Yes, and that was just the first two days.
