...:
Now look at part one.
...:
You will hear a man phoning an internet provider.
...:
First you have some time to look at questions one to four.
...:
Now listen carefully and answer questions one to four.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Hello, Global Internet, how may I help you?
MR. SLOANE:
Hello, I've just moved house and I want to get my internet set up.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Okay sir, could I take your name please?
MR. SLOANE:
Yes, it's James, James Sloan.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
How do you spell Sloane?
MR. SLOANE:
It's S-L-O-A-N-E.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Okay Mr Sloane, what sort of package are you looking for?
MR. SLOANE:
I'm not sure really.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Okay, that's no problem.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Well, if I can just start by taking your address first.
MR. SLOANE:
I live at 17 Melrose Drive.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Sorry, did you say 70?
MR. SLOANE:
No, sorry, 17.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Okay, and the city and postcode?
MR. SLOANE:
Yes, the city is Exeter and the postcode is E-X-34-9-Q-Y.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Okay, that's great.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
I'm just putting that into the computer now.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Okay, so you said you aren't sure what package you would like, is that correct?
MR. SLOANE:
Yes, that's right.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Okay, well I'll ask you a few questions that can help you choose the best package for you.
MR. SLOANE:
Okay, that sounds great.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
First, how many people will use the internet in your house?
MR. SLOANE:
Well, there's me and my wife and our four year old daughter, but she's too young to use it.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
So just two of you?
MR. SLOANE:
No, let's say three.
MR. SLOANE:
Our daughter might need to use it when she starts school next year.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Okay, and which of the following things do you use the internet for?
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Downloading films and music?
MR. SLOANE:
Oh, but my wife sometimes does.
...:
Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions five to ten.
...:
Now listen carefully and answer questions five to ten.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Okay, perfect.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
So I've put all that information into the system and it's suggested three possible packages.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
The first is our basic package.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
It costs £24 a month and that gives you download speeds of up to 17 megabytes per second.
MR. SLOANE:
Oh, that's great.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
However, there is a download limit of 10 gigabytes per month.
MR. SLOANE:
Okay, that's not much.
MR. SLOANE:
I think I want more than 10 gigabytes a month.
MR. SLOANE:
What about the next option?
GLOBAL INTERNET:
That would be our standard package.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
It is a little bit more expensive.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
It's £30 a month.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
It's the same speed as the first package, but you would have unlimited downloads.
MR. SLOANE:
Oh, that's good.
MR. SLOANE:
And the third?
GLOBAL INTERNET:
The third is our premium package.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
You get super fast broadband of up to 40 megabytes a second and that's for just £35 a month.
MR. SLOANE:
Wow, that is fast.
MR. SLOANE:
But is there a limit?
GLOBAL INTERNET:
I'm afraid so.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
It's 50 gigabytes a month.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
However, this option also comes with a free phone line so you can make calls from your house.
MR. SLOANE:
Hmm, 50 gigabytes would definitely be enough.
MR. SLOANE:
However, I don't really need a phone line.
MR. SLOANE:
Also, I don't want to spend too much so I think I'll go for the second option.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Excellent.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Now, when is the best time for an engineer to come and install the router?
MR. SLOANE:
Well, I'm in most evenings after six.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Oh, I'm afraid we can't do after six.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Our next free slot is Monday at 9am.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Would that be good for you?
MR. SLOANE:
No, sorry, I'll start work at nine.
MR. SLOANE:
I could do Wednesday or Thursday at that time.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Oh, I'm sorry, sir.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
We don't have anything available then.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
How about an afternoon?
MR. SLOANE:
I'm busy every afternoon next week.
MR. SLOANE:
I know, let's do the first one.
MR. SLOANE:
I'll just book the morning off work.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Excellent.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Monday at nine it is then.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
The engineer that will be coming is called Jonathan Brown.
MR. SLOANE:
Great, I look forward to seeing him then.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Is there anything else I can help you with?
MR. SLOANE:
No, that's all, thanks.
GLOBAL INTERNET:
Have a good day.
...:
That is the end of part one.
...:
You now have some time to check your answers.
