My very first real conversation in English, back when I was about 16 during a

To tell you a little bit about where I was, I was with my classmates and teachers from high school right at Changi Airport's Jewel – you know, that massive indoor garden with the huge waterfall and all those shiny shops. We this friendly Singaporean family – a mom, dad, and their teenage daughter – who noticed our school uniforms and started chatting. What we talked about was pretty basic at first: they asked where we were from, how long we'd be staying, and if we'd tried any local food yet, and I ended up being the one to answer most of it because I'd been practicing English the hardest in class. I managed to say something like, “We're from Vietnam, this is our first time here – the airport is amazing, we want to try chicken rice soon!” and then asked them for recommendations on what to see in the city.

Honestly, I felt

– my heart was pounding so hard I thought they could hear it, and my hands were sweaty in case I needed to translate. At first, I was or forget words, especially since tones in Vietnamese are so different and I always worried about sounding weird. But when they smiled and kept the conversation going naturally, responding slowly and kindly, this washed over me – like, wow, I can actually communicate with someone who doesn't speak my language! It felt liberating and a bit surreal, you know, realizing . By the end of that short chat, I was , feeling proud and a little more grown-up. That moment really – it showed me it's not just about getting good grades, but about connecting with the world. I still remember their daughter's name was Mei, and she even gave us a tip about the best hawker center nearby.
