The one occasion that stands out for me was during an important university entrance exam back in 2023, right

here in Vietnam. To tell you a little bit about when it happened, it was early July that year – scorching hot outside, but the exam hall felt even more intense – and this was for the national high school graduation cum university admission test that pretty much everyone my age was sweating over.

It took place at a big high school in District 1 with rows of desks, fans whirring overhead, and strict invigilators everywhere. The reason why we weren't allowed to use our mobile phones was simple: it's

national exams to prevent cheating – they make you hand over your phone at the entrance, put it in a sealed bag with your name on it, or leave it in a designated collection area outside the hall. Even smartwatches or anything with a screen gets confiscated, and if you're caught with one during the test, you're retaking for years. They scan you with metal detectors too, just to be thorough.

Honestly, at first I felt really anxious and cut off – you know, that reflex when your hand goes to your pocket for no reason, or you suddenly realize you can't check the time or send a quick message to calm your nerves. It was frustrating because my phone's usually my lifeline for everything, from music to distract me to last-minute revision notes. But after the first hour or so, I actually started to feel

the temptation to scroll or get distracted, I could just without my mind wandering. It forced me to stay present, rely on what I'd prepared, and honestly, it made the whole experience feel more serious and respectful, like we were all in it together . By the end, I was relieved it was over, but also kind of proud that I'd powered through . Looking back, that enforced phone-free zone probably helped me perform better than if I'd had sneaky access.
