The one occasion that instantly comes to mind is Tet holiday this year, just last month when the whole city seemed to

. To tell you a little bit about when it happened, it was the evening of the 29th day of the last lunar month – basically the Lunar New Year's Eve – and the streets were buzzing like never before.

I was with my extended family, you know, my parents, my aunt and uncle, and a bunch of cousins who all piled into our house for the traditional cleaning, decorating, and cooking marathon. What happened was we were all out in the front yard setting up the peach blossom branches, hanging red envelopes on the kumquat tree, and wrapping banh chung while kids ran around lighting sparklers early. Then suddenly the neighbors started joining in; one family brought over a speaker blasting old Tet songs, another showed up with trays of candied fruits and before we knew it, the whole alley had turned into this

. Everyone was laughing, teasing each other about who wrapped the worst banh chung, taking selfies with the giant lion dance heads that some kids were playing with, and just air filled with incense and grilled sausages.

Honestly, most people were smiling because Tet brings out this

renewal and connection – after a whole year of work, traffic, and stress in Saigon, it's like everyone finally exhales together and remembers what really matters: family, traditions, and hoping for a better year ahead. You could see it on every face – the grandparents beaming at their grandkids, the young adults who usually rush everywhere slowing down to chat properly, even the street vendors who joined us looking . That collective happiness is contagious, you know; when everyone's in the same festive mood, cracking jokes and sharing food, it's impossible not to smile. It felt like the whole neighborhood was one big family for the night, and that warmth just radiated everywhere. I still get a little emotional thinking about it – it's those that make Tet so special.
