The traditional story that is “Sự tích cây khế”, or "The Legend of the Starfruit Tree", one of Vietnam’s most famous .

It’s about two brothers who after they die. The older brother is greedy and takes almost everything, including the house, the rice fields, the buffalo, while the younger brother is left with only a small hut and one starfruit tree. One day a magical phoenix lands on the tree and starts eating the fruit. The younger brother is sad, but instead of chasing it away, he politely asks the bird to leave some fruit for him. The phoenix , so it tells him to bring a big bag and flies across the sea to a golden island, where the younger brother fills the bag with gold and jewels. When the greedy older sibling hears the story, he , and secretly sews a huge bag with many hidden pockets. When the phoenix takes him to the island, he . On the way back, the bird can’t fly anymore and drops him into the sea, where he drowns with all his greed.

I first heard this story when I was about six years old, in 2011. My grandmother told it to me one evening on the front porch while we were eating fresh starfruit from our own little tree. I remember her being a full-on actress, all the dramatic parts, like when the greedy brother falls into the water.

As for how I felt when I first heard it, it was : I felt sorry for the kind younger brother at the beginning, then thrilled when the phoenix appeared and took him on an adventure, angry at the greedy older brother, and finally satisfied when justice came at the end, to the point I was jumping up and down. My grandmother finished by tapping the starfruit in my hand and saying, “Remember, .” Even at six years old I understood the lesson, and every time I see a starfruit tree now, even more than fifteen years later, I still smile and think of that evening on the porch with bà ngoại and the magical phoenix.
