There was a time when I lied to protect my younger cousin from getting into trouble, and even though I felt guilty, I knew it was the right thing to do.

It happened a few years ago during the Lunar New Year celebration at my grandparents' house. As part of the tradition, adults gave children lucky money in red envelopes, and my cousin, who was around eight years old at the time, was very excited to receive his share. However, in his excitement, he accidentally knocked over a decorative ceramic vase while running around the living room. The vase, which was quite old and valuable, , and everyone turned to see what had happened.

My cousin looked terrified, knowing that he would be . He was , and I could see how guilty he felt. Without thinking much, I quickly said that I had the table, causing the vase to fall. My grandparents believed me and simply told me to be more careful next time. No one got angry, and the atmosphere quickly returned to normal.

Afterward, my cousin pulled me aside and thanked me over and over again. He promised to be more careful in the future and even gave me some of his lucky money , though I refused to take it. Seeing the relief on his face made me feel that I had done the right thing.

Even though lying is generally not something I encourage, I felt that in this case, it was necessary to protect him. He was still a child, and I didn’t want him to associate the holiday with a bad memory. At the same time, I also taught him a lesson about being careful and responsible.

Looking back, I don’t regret my decision. Sometimes, a small lie can be told out of kindness, especially when it helps someone avoid unnecessary .
